Conclusion

A missionary friend once shared about a person of peace he met and described him this way: “He has the kingdom in his eyes.” Can we see people like this? Look around. There are spiritually receptive people both in the biblical stories and in our neighborhood’s today:

•A tax collector named Matthew sitting at his table . . . could be someone who works in the public sector.

•A woman of bad reputation drawing water by a well . . . could be a bartender or barista.

•An outcast nameless man of the tombs oppressed by legions of demons . . . could be the poor, addicted, and homeless.

•An Ethiopian eunuch reading Scripture in his chariot . . . could be someone of influence from another country or a refugee.

•A solider named Cornelius seeking to understand a vision . . . could be a veteran or active military soldier or family member.

•A business woman named Lydia seeking God by a river . . . could be a career-oriented business woman.

•A jailer in a suicidal crisis ready to end it all . . . could be the desperate one who lost everything.

These people from Scripture were all waiting for someone to obey the Father and share the hope of the gospel. Gary Mayes, in his book The DNA of a Revolution, insightfully writes, “Lots of people are waiting on the other side of our obedience.”8 These modern-day counterparts and their relational networks are all waiting on the other side of our obedience. Let us be faithful to the call.
